Where the Slaves Live - Louis Vuitton Foundation building - Paris

Art Sculpture

Ecohab was instructed by MDM Props as horticultural consultant on a challenging and interesting planting project for a living art sculpture ‘Where the Slaves Live’.

The arts team required advice about suitable plant species for planting in very shallow soils on near vertical surfaces and that would withstand conditions on a Paris roof in all weathers.

Advice was given about suitable substrates and how to stabilise soils and plant material in vertical environments and rock crevices.  Detailed plant species lists were provided for customs purposes and for maintenance staff.

Ecohab provided support on planting of the structure and subsequent maintenance and produced a manual, which detailed the watering schedule, plant health checks, replacement of plants, weeding the structure, how to look after replacement plants.

The sculpture was shipped to Paris in October for the grand opening of an exhibition in the Louis Vuitton Foundation building. The ‘living’ sculpture with its scrambling herbs, ferns and tubers is still evolving and can be seen on the roof terrace of this building.
